The municipality of Alingsås
In Alingsås municipality, almost 4,000 employees work to provide good public services to residents, visitors, companies and associations every day. They do so in accordance with the values: commitment, openness and respect.
The Project
In the municipality of Alingsås, Sweden, all water meters are remotely read every hour to ensure accurate billing and efficient water management. However, our customer faced challenges in collecting data from meters located in basements and other hard-to-reach areas. To solve this, they implemented the Lansen OMS Repeater, which relays measurement values through a multi-hop chain to the gateway. The result was 100% coverage and a satisfied customer.
The Problem
The customer needed a cost-effective solution to collect daily water meter data across a large, low-density residential area for billing. The main alternative—installing an additional gateway with a large antenna—was too expensive.
The Solution
Battery-operated repeaters were deployed to create a data relay chain, ensuring full area coverage. A total of three repeaters were installed. The repeaters were mounted on lighting poles, allowing them to collect data from water meters and forward readings from other meters to a gateway positioned high on a mast. The installation process was quick, standard, and easily handled by the installer.
The Results
The solution led to more than 50% cost savings on materials. Even at full price, the Lansen OMS Repeaters are vastly more cost-efficient, compared to a typical gateway with an antenna. To achieve the necessary coverage with gateways alone, an additional gateway would have been required, adding to the expense. By choosing repeaters, the customer achieved full data collection coverage at a fraction of the cost, making it a smart and efficient solution.
This case highlights how Lansen’s technology enables reliable data collection in challenging environments while significantly reducing costs.
